Book Review: Glaucia The Greek Slave

book
I recently finished reading this book. It is a book of historical fiction that tells about what life was like in Athens during the first century. In this book, the two main characters are Glaucia and her brother, Leon. The girl was sold as a slave to pay the debts that were owed. The boy narrowly escaped being sold as a slave too. He went off in search of his sister and tried to think up a dreadful scheme to be able to get enough money to pay her ransom. Glaucia was sold to a family who needed a housemaid. Overtime, an old man named Paul who was in prison for preaching the Gospel, influenced her and she became a Christian. She heard about a God who cared for slaves and she began to search for Him. After many trials, her brother found her, she was ransomed, and her brother became a Christian as well. This book shows that in the end, the truth will always prevail no matter what the cost.

2010 Beach Trip

This is a documentary of our 2010 beach trip. We left for the beach after church and got here about 3:30. After we got to the beach house, Galena, Lydia, Karl, Greta, Peter, and I walked down the beach to climb the big sand dune. The sand was kind of hot due to the warm weather outside. Galena found a whole sand dollar. Here are some pictures from our trip.

The Smell of Fresh Bread

There’s something about the smell of fresh bread, that doesn’t go away. It’s something when you spend the morning mixing the dough, watching it rise and then popping it into the oven. Today I spent part of the morning mixing up a batch of whole wheat bread and a batch of Parmesan herb bread. The whole wheat bread, I divided into sections. One section, I made into fifteen hamburger buns, then I made some plain loaves, and finally the herb bread. I didn’t get a picture of the herb bread because we ate it too fast, but here are some pictures of the rest of the bread. Hope you enjoy them.

I experimented with the light striking at the bread. The top picture and the bottom picture were taken with the kitchen light on. The one in the middle was not.

Fun With Bowling

Last night, Dad, Mom, and Grandma took me out on an excursion to celebrate my 25th birthday. The first thing that we did was go to Gustavs for dinner. After getting our places, we all thought about what we would order. Everyone ended up getting Weinershnitzel and having an enjoyable time conversing with each other.

After dinner was over, we all headed to the bowling alley which was a big place, a little ways away from where we ate. When we got there, each person was fitted for their shoe size. Dad signed us in for two games and we were able to watch our progress on the screens overhead. I used a ten pound ball. Dad was the first person to go. He showed me how to do it. After getting the hang of it, I was able to get one strike and several spares. A strike is where you knock them all down on the first throw and a spare is where you knock some of them down. If that happens, you get a second try to knock the rest down before it is scored. I had a lot of fun. Here are some pictures.

Fourth of July Celebration

Our fourth of July was celebrated as an afternoon of fun and fellowship. Because the Fourth of July was on Sunday this year, we celebrated it yesterday. The afternoon consisted of a variety of games and contests and it was topped off with a water balloon fight, despite the cold weather.
There was a log walking contest in which you had to walk the log trail without falling off or bumping into another person.
There was an obstacle course made out of sticks which teams were supposed to go through blindfolded.
We did many other things too after which we partook in a delicious barbecue and had fun and fellowship.

Berry Picking

This morning the lot of us took the opportunity to traverse to the berry farms to pick a bunch of berries. A lot of people from church were also picking berries. When we got there, it took us a while to find where the other people were picking. Each of us got one or two buckets and started traversing down the rows full of juicy berries. I think that we were able to get a bit over fifty pounds. Even my little sister, Iona got her fill of berries.
Most of these berries are being frozen. We might make some of them into jam. Raspberries are amazingly easy to pick and eat.

Happy Father’s Day

4.He is passionate about God’s Word.

5.He loves his wife and his children.

6.He seeks to spend time with them.

7.He is a man of perseverance.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad. Thank you for all that you have done and continue to do for your family.

Sewing a Blanket

I always enjoy it when I get the chance to sew something with my own hands or by machine. I recently purchased a kit from the fabric store to make a blanket with fringe around the border. The blanket had two sides; each of a different color. Mom and I both agreed that pink and green were good colors for a spring blanket. This blanket was made step by step.
Step 1:Thread the machine and wind the bobbin. The thread that I used was a lime green color.

Step 2:Put the bobbin in its socket.

Step 3:Lay out the fabric and pin it together; about two inches from the edge, all the way around.

Step 4:Sew all the way around the blanket where the pins are and pull them out as you get to them.

Step 5:Backstitch when you get to the end.

Step 6:Lay the blanket out flat on the table.

Step 7:Cut the fringes. Leave a few millimeters of space in between the stitches and the fringes.

Step 8:Cut square at the corners.

Step 9:Admire your finished product.

If God is For Us, Who Can be Against Us…

These are the words of the apostle, Paul, who used to persecute the people of God for his own pleasure. Before Paul was converted, the things that he did greatly revealed the sin of a fallen man. After he was converted, however, his whole outlook on life changed. God is Emmanuel. He is with us until the end of the age.

The Rock

It was a firm foundation,
On which to build my house.
The billows were rising all around.
I could not turn about.

There was much sand around me,
A storm was coming on.
I had to build quite quickly,
Or all, it would be gone.

I saw a great rock in my way.
I knew to go straight to it.
It was the fortress for my home.
The waves could not o’er throw it.

I traversed straight up to the rock.
It could not be o’er thrown.
Jesus was right in front of me.
He would not let me down.

I started building up my house,
Upon the great big rock.
Jesus, he was the one,
On which my house stood on.

All the billows of this life,
They could not throw me down.
With Jesus there to hold me up,
I would not ever drown.

The Rock was higher than I was.
It never could be moved.
As long as I stayed upon this rock,
I could not be pursued.

I was glad I chose the Rock.
I could not be swept away.
Jesus would hold me in His hands,
And keep me all my days.

Some, they built upon the sand.
The storm, it did o’er take them.
I was high up in His Hand.
And I would stay with Him.

God will fight for us. He will help us through life’s perils. He is a shelter in the time of storm. No matter what things we encounter in this life, God will always help us to get through them and when He returns, we will meet Him at the Heavenly Gates. When we feel down, isn’t it a comfort that we can go to God in prayer and tell HIm all our cares and worries? He will never leave us or forsake us.
“He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will he not also with Him graciously give us all things?” Romans 8:32

Thanks be to God who gives us the power to overcome evil with good. If we persevere, we will win in the end with God’s help.

Quote of the Day

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”
